Compared to Nabucco and I Lombardi alla prima crociata, in Ernani the social and political elements essentially respect the personal dramas of the characters. Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, in coproduction with Sidney Opera House, stages an excellent version of this seldom-performed masterpiece.
Among Verdi’s early operas, Ernani is perhaps the most successful with the exception of the well-known Nabucco.
